The Sleep Disorders Center helps individuals return to a normal, productive lifestyle through diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, and periodic limb movement disorder. Our team of experienced, knowledgeable professionals follow the guidelines of the American Sleep Disorders Association.

Our Sleep Disorders Center brings together a board-certified sleep pulmonologist and staff to diagnose and treat sleep problems.  A variety of diagnostic tests and treatments are available for the following sleep disorders:

Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops many times a night for periods of up to two minutes. Sleep apnea is often characterized by loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable sleep episodes during the day that interfere with activities at work or school.

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

The notable symptom of this disorder is the repetitive kicking, jerking or flexing of arms or legs throughout the night due to involuntary muscle contractions.

Chronic Insomnia

People with insomnia are unable to fall asleep or remain asleep.  This disorder can be caused by a variety of conditions, including sleep apnea, periodic limb movements, breathing difficulties.  It can be brought on by depression or stress.

Nightmares or Night Terrors.

Nightmares are frightening dreams that can be recalled later.  They may occur at any age and, in adults, may be related to psychological factors. Night terrors, on the other hand, cannot be recalled in the morning and are most common in children.

Work-Shift Change Syndrome

Significant changes in your sleep-wake schedule, such as those due to shift work or jet lag can cause trouble with concentration and performance.

How the Sleep Disorders Center at Wood County Hospital can help you.

When you call the Sleep Disorders Center, we will schedule a test date and orientation.  At orientation, you will receive a tour, education session and a sleep diary to complete prior to testing.

Sleep Studies

We work closely with your referring physician to conduct and evaluate your sleep studies. The sleep study requires an overnight stay in a private bedroom that simulates a home setting.  While you sleep, polysomnographic technologists observe your sleep patterns in a separate room. Sleep patterns, heart and brain activity, blood oxygen levels and body movements are monitored. You may also be asked to stay during the day so that we may assess daytime sleepiness. The results of your tests are then forwarded to your physician with recommendations for treatment when appropriate.

Treatment

The team of sleep specialists will evaluate the results of your studies and make recommendations for treatment to your primary care physician.  Your primary physician may refer you to a physician who specializes in specific sleep disorder treatment. If a sleep disorders is diagnosed, it can usually be treated effectively with a range of medical treatments which include:

  • Continuous or bi-level positive airway pressure (CPAP/BIPAP)therapy

Sleep apnea, snoring and other respiratory disorders are frequently treated with CPAP therapy.  These devices help keep airways open by preventing the throat from blocking air movement to the lungs. They deliver positive airway pressure to help maintain an open airway, allowing a patient to breathe normally.  Pressure can be delivered through a mask that covers the mouth or nose.

Medication

In some cases prescription medications may be effective in treating disorders such as narcolepsy and periodic limb movements.

Lifestyle changes

Leading a healthy lifestyle can help promote a good night’s sleep. You may be advised of changes you can make such as eating a healthy diet; avoiding caffeine, alcohol and nicotine near bedtime; and getting regular exercise during the day-but not right before bed.
