There’s no longer any reason to live with an open sore.
Every wound has its unique set of circumstances. We are expert at caring for people whose open sores have resisted traditional treatment with a success rate of 89% healed in 16 weeks.
About the Wound Healing Center at Wood County Hospital
The Wound Healing Center is staffed with a unique team of doctors, nurses and therapists, all dedicated to healing chronic wounds, the underlying causes of which include diabetes, circulatory disease, radiation burns and skin grafts.
Todd Tamlyn, MD, General Surgeon, is Medical Director of the Wound Healing Center. Other physicians who see patients at the center are: D. Wayne, Bell, MD, Family Practice; Innocent Ubunama, DO, Vascular Surgeon; Richard Walsh, MD, Family Practice; and David Witt, DPM, Podiatrist. These physicians all have undergone specialized training in wound healing. They are experts in treating diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous ulcers and various other wounds.
The causes of open sores are complex and our group represents expertise in all of the major areas necessary to handle their carried circumstances and challenges. It could be as simple as changing a medication, or more complex. Whatever it takes for healing to occur, we’re equipped and staffed to make it happen.
The Wound Healing Center’s staff includes Program Director Michele C. Youngdale, MS, BSN, RN, COHN-S; Clinical Nurse Manager Todd Bierley, BSN,RN; Nurse Case Manager Paula McNay, RN; Hyperbaric Oxygen Technician Catherine Clingerman, LPN; and Office Coordinator Brenda Slattman.
This wound healing team provides each patient with a customized treatment plan. Depending on a patient’s condition and needs, the wound healing physicians may prescribe some of the following therapies:
· Debridement (removal of dead or damaged tissue)
· Specially chosen dressings and wraps
· Bio-engineered tissue substitutes
· Platelet growth technologies
· Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which surrounds the patient with 100 percent oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure in sessions, or dives, that last 90 minutes to two hours. This increases the amount of oxygen in the patient’s blood, allowing red blood cells to pass more easily through the plasma into the wounds to heal them from the inside out.
Wood County Hospital partners with National Healing Corporation to manage the Wound Healing Center. National Healing® has opened and continues to manage more than 100 hospital-based centers offering wound healing, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy services across America and has earned The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification for wound care.

At the Wound Healing Center, you’ll receive the right treatment to heal your wound. Your wound care physician may prescribe some of these therapies:
· Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Breathing 100% oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure is a painless, proven way to help the body heal. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers work by surrounding the patient with 100 % oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure in sessions, or dives, that last 90 minutes to two hours. This increases the amount of oxygen in the patient's blood allowing red blood cells to pass more easily through the plasma into the wounds to heal them from the inside out.
Introduced in the mid-'60s, HBO chambers have evolved to treat patients suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections, compromised skin grafts and flaps, and wounds that haven't healed within 30 days. HBO therapy is also used to treat injury for previous radiation.
Weighing more than one ton each, the HBO chambers resemble a reclining bed encased in a clear acrylic shell nearly a yard in diameter. Patients can listen to music or watch movies on televisions and DVD players mounted above the chamber while remaining in constant contact with those outside the chamber through an intercom and private handset. The only physical sensation resulting from the treatment is a slight pressure on the eardrum, such as that felt when a plane lands, as the air in the chamber is compressed. The Wound Healing Center is one of the few facilities in Northwest Ohio to offer HBO therapy.
